Officers and medical staff take part in a procession for officer Daniel A. McCartney, 34, of Yelm, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash., on Monday, Jan. 8, 2018. McCartney was shot and killed late Sunday while chasing two burglars in the Frederickson area.

This month was dominated by coverage of the shooting death of Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy Daniel McCartney. It was a heavy story. Especially coming off the heels of the Amtrak Train derailment only weeks ago. The night of the shooting, I was asked by the Sheriff’s department to photograph from inside the hospital as they brought out the deputy’s body to send to the Medical Examiner. I tried to shoot as few frames as possible as every click of the shutter sounded like a firework compared to the silence inside the hospital hallway.

I cried once I got back to my car, filed and gave myself a minute to settle. I called a friend who I knew would be up, and then headed out to the scene of another shooting that happened right before I arrived at the hospital.

As journalists, we are often on the front lines during the worst times in other people’s lives. Especially when it comes to breaking news. It’s important to be able to talk about that and take the time to reflect and heal after particularly rough assignments.

Anyway, story over. Here are a few favorite frames from January.

As always, thank you for taking a look.

When the Tacoma City Council approved a settlement agreement with the company that owns the majority of the city’s billboards last month, it included a provision that 111 billboard faces would be removed in the next five years. That won’t include the 46-foot structure that towers over Memo’s Mexican Food near the intersection of South Sprague and Division Avenues. That billboard is privately owned by the owners of that property. Photographed in Tacoma, Wash., on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018.
